Woodland Turkeys Produced in Partnership with The Woodland Trust and Gressingham Foods

If you are planting woodland or have existing woodland that was planted in the last 50 years and would like additional income from this land you may want to read on.

Woodland turkey is produced fresh for Christmas between September and December.  They can be housed in mobile houses or mobile poly tunnels (without planning permission), they will utilise straw from an arable enterprise and return valuable nutrients back for crop production, reducing fertilizer costs and improving soil structure.  The housing can then either be closed until the next year or utilised as lambing shelters or similar.

The woodland must meet the following specification as agreed by the above partners:

  1. At least 20% of the available range area must have tree cover from either new tree planting or existing recent plantations of trees or shrubs

  2. Woodland farms should be created on former intensive agricultural land (arable or improved grassland) thus allowing for net biodiversity gain

  3. Newly planted tree cover to comprise a maximum of 50% fast growing native species and/or Poplar to achieve rapid canopy cover and 50% native broadleaved trees

  4. A tree specialist must be consulted to ensure the most appropriate species are selected prior to planting, to provide the best benefit for the site

The turkey production would be based on a contractual basis primarily comprising of the following:

  1. Turkeys would be provided by Green Label Farms LLP

  2. Feed will be provided by Green Label Farms LLP

  3. Management support and advice will be provided by Green Label Farms LLP's field staff

  4. Catching and transport of the birds for processing will be carried out by Green Label Farms LLP

  5. Daily labour, straw, energy and other variable costs will be provided by the farmer

  6. Payment will be by BACS the week after processing, on a per bird processed basis
